Spicy Vegan Omelette with Tamarind Chutney

Besan can be a life changing ingredient for vegans. And there are only a 1000 ways of using it in cooking. 

To make this spicy vegan omelette all you need is a cup of besan, some salt, some red chili, some fresh coriander or cilantro, 1/2 tsp of finely chopped garlic, 1/2 tsp of finely chopped ginger and a little chopped onion. Mix it all together in a bowl with half a cup of water. You might need to add a little more water depending on the consistency- aim for a pancake batter thickness. 

Next, heat some vegetable oil in a non stick pan. Pour some of the batter into the pan. Fry on both sides till golden brown. 

For the tamarind chutney you need a 6 tbsp of tamarind paste. Mix this with 2 cups of water, a tsp of red chili powder, salt, jaggery, 1/2 tsp of saunth (ginger powder), 1/2 tsp of jeera (cumin) powder. Boil this mixture for a few minutes and let it cook on low heat till it has the consistency of a nice thick sauce. 

Serve the "chilla" or omelettes with tamarind chutney. Feel free to garnish with fresh coriander and chopped onions.

If you're craving a juicy burger this monsoon, hop over to Jamjar Diner in Versova. The Veggie and the BBQ Veggie burgers can be veganized if you ask them to leave the cheese out. Root vegetables, a juicy bean patty and crumb fried onions make this burger extra crunchy and extra sinful. And we haven't even gotten to the fries yet. :)

Vegan Street Food- Colaba!

Vegan snacks on the streets of Colaba are hot, crunchy and spicy! Roasted peanuts, chana and Chana Zor Garam are perfect for a rainy day! The vendors usually serve them with chopped onions, green chilies, tomatoes and lemon, but if you're wary of infections just skip the raw veggies!

Personal favorite: Chana Zor Garam with a squeeze of lemon! Look for the vendors right outside of the Gateway of India.

Pani Puri- India's Yummiest Vegan Offering!

Pani puri, golgappa, phucka- India has many names for this fantastic snack. But pani puri by any other name would taste just as awesome. 

The first bite of this delicious snack promises to cause an explosion of flavors in your mouth. The crunchy wheat pastry, the soft spicy potato filling with heaty onions and coriander, the sweet and spicy ice cold mint water- I can't think of any other food that can bring so much joy in so little a bite. 

Pani puri is sold on every street corner in India. If you've been out in the hot Indian sun, all you need is a bite of this refreshing snack to lift up your spirits!!

Middle Eastern Take-Away: Sufra

Sufra, the new Middle Eastern take-away on Carter Road Bandra, has a lot of vegan options. The Vegetable Shwarma, Traditional Falafels, Hummus Salad, Fattoush, Moutabal (aubergine, tahini, lime, olive oil), Muhamara (groundnuts with chili and red pepper) are all pretty okay. I wouldn't say they are amazing, but they are not bad for the price. I don't think I will go back there again but if you're craving fattoush or falafels, this is not an entirely worthless option. 

Recommended: The hot mint tea and fattoush!

DIY Pizza Sauce Bagel at Bagelwala, Bandra

So I went to Bagelwala with very high expectations of finding bagels with vegan toppings. One look at the menu shattered my hopes. Almost everything had cream cheese or some sort of cheese in it. My only options were peanut butter and jam and I was not particularly in the mood for a dessert bagel. I think there was some hummus somewhere in there too, but that was it. Just when I was reconciling myself to the idea of eating a plain onion bagel, I saw a staff member carrying a jar of pizza sauce to the kitchen. The nice man at the Bagelwala agreed to give me some of the pizza sauce as a topping for my bagel. 

I have to say the end result was very nice but it could have been so much better if there was at least one vegan bagel/ sandwich/ dessert to choose from!

Vegan Momos at BusaGo in Bandra

BusaGo is the latest in a line of quaint places to open up in Pali Naka in Bandra. It is a South-East Asian restaurant that serves everything from Burmese 'Kaukswe' to stir-fries and Green Curry. The place is quite vegan friendly as far as the choice of food goes. Nothing vegan in the dessert section though. Nor any soy milk smoothies. 

I ordered the vegan momos and was not bowled over by them. The momos itself tasted just about okay (perfectly sized though!) but the sauces didn't do anything for me. There was a green chilly sauce a red sweet chilli sauce- neither of which are anything like the spicy hot momo sauce of the north eastern states of India. 

But do try the fresh juices. I tried the Good Morning Bandra which is a mix of orange, sweet lime and guava. I asked them to replace the guava with pineapple (which they were very nice about doing) and the result was delicious!

Garlic Mushrooms on Toasties

What you'll need:
  • 2 cups coarsely chopped button mushrooms
  • Sliced bread- cut each slice into 4 pieces 
  • Finely chopped garlic- lots of it!
  • Fresh basil- finely chopped
  • Dried oregano
  • Chili flakes
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Salt
  • Olive oil
Heat olive oil. Add garlic. Cook till brown. Now add the mushrooms, salt, chili, pepper, salt, basil, oregano, and cook till the mushrooms are cooked and slightly brown. Toast the bread till golden. Spread the mushrooms over it, drizzle some extra virgin olive oil on them and they're ready to serve!
